Listen Up If You Want To Be A Good Conversationalist
Did you know that an essential part of being a good conversationalist is being a good listener? It may seem odd but it is true. When you show respect for the person with whom you are conversing they will think you are a good and engaging conversationalist. They will want to talk to you again and you will build your networking community, having fun along the way.
Here are three simple tips to follow:
- Focus on the person in front of you. This means no looking over their shoulder to see who else is in the room.
-Do not monopolize the conversation. A conversation necessarily involves two people, otherwise it is a monologue. Let the other person talk and don't interrupt them.
-Listen. Many people try to think of the next thing they are going to say instead of truly listening to what is being said. Smile, keep eye contact, nod in understanding and ask a follow-up question.
Remember, people love to talk about themselves. Let them do that and show them respect by acting like a captivated audience. You will learn new things and it will be easier to ask follow-up questions to keep the conversation flowing.
Follow these tips at the next gathering you attend and you will be well on your way to being a good conversationalist.
Have a marvelous week. - Catherine
